I Wholeheartedly agree Ellen about background. Unless your picture was taken by someone at an event try and find uncluttered background with ample lighting
that compliments your skin color and clothing. Remember
too much lighting will washout your features (make them
indistinguishable) and conversely too little will not
allow people to see your attributes.
When you speak of cropping (which is taking a small part of a photo and blowing up that small portion you should shoot your pictures using the highest resolution
setting that you can, also eliminate red eye. In order to do these thing you need some digital imaging software
such as Adobe Photo Shop, Digital Imaging by Microsoft,
or Paint Shop Pro by Corel.
Remember before you take a good look at your area background and try to frame out all unwanted distractions. Lots of luck with your shots
